A couple of stories in Shack: The Cutland Junction Stories are among the best of Harvey’s writing, especially No Better a House, The Letter, and The Smiling Clerk [sic]. They have in common a lead character that is an aged, seasoned, often semi-literate man, a persona Harvey creates with astonishing ease.
