His books include This Dark Embrace (Mercury), The Storms Below: The Turbulent Life and Times of Hugh Garner (biography; Lorimer, 1988), which was shortlisted for the City of Toronto Book Award, Clearing the Ground: English-Canadian Literature after Survival, and his highly successful first mystery novel, Dont Deal Five Deuces (with Hugh Garner; Stoddart, 1992).
